What is the relation between craft and writing? Is it to enhance our enjoyment of craft? How does the craft sensibility influence writing practice? Is it more about attention to detail than the bigger picture?

Writing puts newly-made craft objects in context. Even a small amount of information can enhance the point-of-sale experience. Knowing something about the maker and the making creates a relationship with the customer and reinforces the pleasure of ownership over time. While makers focus on what they are doing now, time inexorably passes and some of the objects they have made find new lives and contexts. Writing that records the craft activities of the time can help reunite an object with its provenance when this has been lost. Writing and pictures may be the only records of some craft activities and thus become essential source material for understanding the cultural history of a place and time.
