Convenor started the forum topic What’s the role of a national craft organisation? in the group
Café Austral 6 months, 1 week agoThe Australia Council recently decided to de-fund Craft Australia. Given the geographical size of Australia, it operates on a federal system, which grants some autonomy to the states. So there are a number of […]

The issue seems to be, not that there is no longer a need for a national craft organisation in a federation of states, but rather that Object sees itself as taking on that role here in Australia in a very proactive way. Object’s tagline is “Australian Centre for Design” and it makes it clear on its About page and vision document…[Read more]

Thanks for pointing this out Judith. Yes, there’s no question that Object has laid very ambitious plans as a national body for design. But this does not at all cover the role that a national craft body would play. Its aims do not relate to the promotion of an ongoing national story about the things we make as expressions of place. Theirs is a…[Read more]

I get the feeling that design is increasingly being used as an inclusive term for ‘craft, design and creativity’. The Dictionary of Australian Artists Online (http://www.daao.org.au/) renamed itself Design and Art Australia to be more inclusive, but the semantic issues reflect an ongoing unresolved dialectic. The transition from Craft…[Read more]

Both design and art are relatively abstract activities that emphasis creativity and imagination. But someone somewhere is going to have to make these ideas a reality. Because thinking and making have become globally separated (think in the West and make in the East), we tend to take production and skill for granted. But I think the GFC is showing…[Read more]

OK, I’m convinced! It does sound as though there will be a significant gap in the tripartite infrastructure without Craft Australia. The Arts Council Strategic Directions [1] still include craft under the Visual Arts Board. The 2002 Visual Arts and Crafts Strategy [2] had strong recommendations in 6.3 for a limited number of organisations to…[Read more]

Convenor started the forum topic Code as Craft call for papers in the group
Main Table: 8 months agoThis seems a very interesting attempt to tie craft to the information age – code as artifact. This is an open call for papers to present at the annual College Art Association conference in Los Angeles in 2012, at a panel sponsored by the New Media Caucus. PANEL TITLE Code as craft: Programming in the [...]

Conventional art institutions such as museums and galleries have had problematic relationships with three-dimensional utilitarian objects since their inception. As several scholars, including Ruth Phillips and James Clifford, have argued, conventional displays deprive…[Read more]

Main Table: 9 months, 2 weeks agoThanks for sharing this Janet. I’d be interested to know if there’s any research being conducted into the effectiveness of video teaching in craft. It’s counter-intuitive, but if it is successful in particular contexts, then it might be useful other areas too, like craft exchange.

My ex Dr Nicola Wood did her PhD looking at using digital media for transmitting craft knowledge. PhD is here http://www.archive.org/download/TransmittingCraftKnowledgeDesigningInteractiveMediaToSupportTacit_590/2006_Wood_thesis.pdf but if you want the one paragraph summary of how well video works for transmitting craft skills and the role it can…[Read more]

Main Table: 9 months, 2 weeks agoInteresting to read your post Janet, I am considering producing some videos for our 3D Design BA that give some basic introductions to different areas on the course such as glass and ceramics. Were your videos purely technique based or did they also introduce the context of the projects?

‘Sustainability’ certainly seems the word of the 21st century. But it is not unprecedented. As the papers in the latest issue of Craft & Design Enquiry show, there are strong connections with the response to industrialisation by Arts & Crafts Movement in 19th century England. Reviewing this history may provide an important guide to the future. …[Read more] -

LizAnne Jensen posted on the forum topic When sculptors craft in the group
Main Table: 10 months agoI suppose we are craft sculptors. We make handcrafted copper weather vanes using techniques that date back to Hellenistic Greek times. Our work is intentionally not three-dimensional for functionality’s sake; weathervane sculpture pieces need to turn in the wind. The style of sculpture we do is called swell bodied, rather than full bodied, so they [...]
